Michael Barry Chief Communications Officer | Insurance Information Institute

ST. JOHNS, Fla., May 3, 2024 – The Insurance Information Institute (Triple-I) is urging individuals in hurricane-prone areas to prepare for what is anticipated to be a busy 2024 Atlantic hurricane season. The season, projected to be "very active," is expected to bring significant challenges, as highlighted by Triple-I CEO Sean Kevelighan during National Hurricane Preparedness Week.

Kevelighan emphasized the importance of financial protection and property resilience, stating, "During National Hurricane Preparedness Week, everyone who lives in a hurricane-prone community should take a few moments to ensure they have adequate financial protection for their property and possessions, while also taking steps to make their home or business more resilient to the impacts of wind and water."

With the rising costs of construction materials and labor impacting home replacement expenses, Kevelighan recommended individuals review their insurance coverage to ensure they are adequately protected. He also underscored the significance of flood insurance, noting that "nearly 90% of U.S. natural disasters involve flooding so most areas of the country are prone to flooding."

As part of preparations for the upcoming season, Triple-I outlined four key hurricane readiness tips. These include reviewing insurance coverage, protecting vehicles with comprehensive auto coverage, ensuring possessions are adequately covered, and making properties more resilient against wind damage.

In light of the forecasted 2024 Atlantic hurricane season, individuals are advised to take proactive measures to safeguard their homes, belongings, and vehicles. By following the recommended guidelines and preparing in advance, residents in hurricane-prone regions can enhance their readiness and resilience in the face of potential storms.
