SALT LAKE CHAMBER: Salt Lake Chamber and Sen. Lee Announce Support for S. 3013

The Salt Lake Chamber, Utah’s largest and longest-standing business association, has signed onto the U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s coalition letter urging senators to support Sen. Bob Corker‘s (R-IT) tariff bill, S. 3013

Salt Lake Chamber issued the following announcement on June 29.

The Salt Lake Chamber, Utah’s largest and longest-standing business association, has signed onto the U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s coalition letter urging senators to support Sen. Bob Corker‘s (R-IT) tariff bill, S. 3013, which would require the president to submit to Congress any proposal to raise tariffs in the interest of national security under Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act of 1962.

Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT) also supports Corker’s tariff bill and has been working with Sen. Corker to get a vote on his bill all week.

“Utah is a trade surplus state and one of the fastest growing export economies in the country. This is a credit to the thousands of Utah companies that are competing and winning in the global economy,” said Derek B. Miller, president and CEO of the Salt Lake Chamber. “Tariffs and trade wars will have a negative impact on Utah’s economic success. Congress should assert its authority under the constitution to ensure that any tariffs imposed under the guise of national security are weighed with the need to safeguard our nation’s economic prosperity.”

“The tariffs announced by the president this year impose a tax hike on the American people–one that will harm both workers and consumers,” Sen. Lee said. “While I am sympathetic to the issues facing domestic steel manufacturers, there are better ways to address the steel industry’s concerns. I am proud to be working with Sen. Corker to find a way for Congress to solve this problem.”

In total, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce is joined by 51 trade groups and 222 state and local chambers of commerce in signing the letter. The bill is co-sponsored by seven Republican senators and four Democrats.
